Role: Unix/Linux Platform Engineer

Location: Fort Worth, TX

Duration: 3-6 Months+

 

Job Description:  

 

JOB PURPOSE

As part of the technical GIS Hosting Unix/Linux Services, this role is responsible for:

·          Build new solutions (Prototypes, Template, Concept)

·          Lead technical Design in Changes and Projects

·          Engineering, configuration, and administration of Unix and Linux Enterprise Architectures – Lead for Linux Platforms, Secondary for all other Unix/Linux Platforms

·          Provide System Architecture support to Client Business IT Application teams

·          Responsible for Level 4 support for all Unix/Linux related issues

·          Assist in Level 1-3 support responsibilities and help train lower level engineers/administrators including creation of Trouble Shooting Guides

·          Organize and coordinate the activities associated with installation, deployment, and upgrade or repairs to core Unix/Linux infrastructure systems.  Define standards to be used by Level 1-4 support for the same activities for the Business IT Application Servers.  Train Level 1-3 and verify compliance to established standards/guidelines

·          Improve, track progress, and make recommendations on Infrastructure Improvements

·          Capable of taking technical lead role for category A and B projects with more than 4 indirect reports.

·          Must operate at a Senior level in multiple Unix/Linux OS flavors preferably in AIX, Solaris, RedHat, and SUSE operating systems

– Linux RHEL or SUSE Expertise Required For this Individual (RHEL expertise preferred)

·  Capable of leading projects related to Client' operational Unix/Linux environments with either local or global scope.

 Service Innovation

·          Identify Demand/CSI, trends, (IT) best-practices

·          (Joint) Solution Evaluation, Approval and support of Change/Project

 As an Engineer, the responsibilities require to

·          develop and enforce architectural governance, deployment standards and best practices for Unix/Linux

·          including installation, patching and high availability configurations;

·          develop and document database architectures and deployment procedures.

 The technical scope of the job includes

·          AIX, Sun Solaris, RedHat (RHEL), HPUX, SUSE, etc.

·          Unix and Linux Administration and Engineering

·          Scripting automation skills – perl, ksh, and bash, etc. 

 The functional scope of the job includes

·          Design, Engineering, configuration, and administration of Unix and Linux Enterprise (Note:  administration role will be as an escalation point.  Role will not typically have day to day OS administration duties.  These will be performed by the OS Administration Services/personnel (e.g. typically by external service providers))

 KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

·          Achieve agreed targets in terms of quality, time and cost.

·          Ensure operational stability

·          Design/Implement strategies to allow ongoing operational upgrades and ever-greening of technical solutions

·          Ensure that the systems remains qualified and that all new processes go through a proper vetting as determined by quality management.

·          Adhere to Manufacturers best practices whenever possible to ensure operational integrity.

·          Train and assist in directing lower technical resources to promote positive resource usage.

·          Cross train on other platforms and ensure other Platform team members are able to backfill during absences

 ACCOUNTABILITIES

·          In addition to accountabilities listed above in Job Purpose:

·          Responsible for the overall coordination and design of the required technology. He/She understands how architectures, strategies, designs and plans fit together and understands all the main aspects of design.

·          Creation of platform standards, SOPs, IQ/OQs, WIs (work instructions), etc.

·          Develop and maintain OS deployment solutions (e.g. AIX NIM, Solaris Jumpstart, Linux Kickstart) to automate deployment processes and assist in their qualification.

·          Provide technical expertise for planning and defining upgrade requirements: perform feasibility and performance studies including benchmark, capacity planning, and sizing of server architecture.

·          Create new system recommendations to meet user needs, including the system configurations and installation planning.

·          Assist/Lead in the implementation and design of new upgrades to Unix/Linux infrastructures/systems

·          Consulted on new or changed services, SLAs, OLAs and contracts.

·          Designs secure and resilient technology architectures that meet all the current and anticipated future IT requirements of the organization.

·          Designs an appropriate and suitable service portfolio, supporting all activities within the complete service lifecycle.

·          Designs measurement methods and metrics to support the continual improvement of service provision and all supporting processes.

·          Produces and keep up to date all IT design, architectural, policy and specification documentation.

·          Produces and maintains all aspects of IT specification, including the overall designs, architectures, topologies and configurations of the infrastructure, environment, applications and data, and the design documentation of all IT systems. This should include not just the technology, but also the management systems, processes, information flows and external services.

·          Recommends proactive, innovative IT solutions for the improvement of IT design and operation whenever and wherever possible.

·          Translates logical designs into physical designs, taking account of business requirements, target environments, processes, performance requirements, existing systems and services, and any potential safety-related aspects.

·          Creates and maintains IT design policies, philosophies and criteria, covering all areas including connectivity, capacity, interfaces, security, resilience, recovery, access and remote access.  Ensures that all new services meet their service levels and targets.

·          Works with capacity management and reviews IT traffic volumes and requirements.  Identifies trends in traffic flows and levels of service.

·          Proposes design enhancements to IT infrastructure, capacity changes, continuity, backup and recovery arrangements, as required, and being aware of operational requirements, especially in terms of service levels, availability, response times, security and repair times. All these activities are performed in liaison with all of the service management processes.

·          Advises and guides management on the design and planning phases of IT systems.  Ensures that requirements (particularly capacity, recovery, performance and security needs) are reflected in the overall specifications.

·          Advises and guides all areas of IT and business management, analysts, planners, designers and developers on all aspects of IT design and technology.

·          Interfaces with designers and planners from external suppliers and service providers.

·          Ensures all external IT services are designed to meet their agreed service levels and targets. Plays a major role in the selection of any new IT infrastructure or technology solutions.

·          Assumes technical responsibility for IT standards, policy and design for all significant projects or major application areas.  Assists with the impact assessment and evaluation of major new IT design options. Provides technical advice and guidance on relevant national and international standards, regulations, protocols and tariffs.

·          Assumes full responsibility for the design aspects of all stages of the lifecycle of IT systems, including investigation, analysis, specification, design, development, construction, testing, maintenance, upgrade, transition, operation and improvement.

·          Works with IT colleagues where appropriate, producing or updating IT and corporate design documentation and models.

·          Updates or provides input to cost benefit analyses, risk assessments, business cases, statements of requirements (SoRs) and invitations to tender (ITTs), and development plans, to take account of design decisions.

·          Obtains and assists with the evaluation and selection of proposals and solutions from suppliers of equipment, software and other IT service and product providers.

·          Constructs, interprets and monitors test plans.  Verifies correct operation of completed systems against their design objectives.

·          Documents all work using required standards, methods and tools.

·          Maintains a good technical knowledge of all IT product capabilities and the technical frameworks in which they operate.

·          Plays a key supportive role in the optimal planning and deployment of all activities associated with a release.

·          Helps to design the release package, during the service design stage of the service lifecycle, in conjunction with personnel from other teams and functions.

·          Establishes the final release configuration, including knowledge, information, hardware, software and infrastructure.

·          Builds the release.

·          Tests the release prior to independent testing.

·          Establishes and reports outstanding known errors and workarounds.

·          Provides input to support change authorization for check-in of the release to the definitive media library (DML).

·          Ensure day to day operations of core Unix/Linux infrastructure

·          Assist/Lead in selection, engineering, configuration, SOP creation, and Qualification of core (Unix/Linux) infrastructure tools (e.g. hardware & OS monitoring, User ID mgmt, etc)

·          Provide technical consultation for Business Application activities on Unix/Linux infrastructures.  Provide feedback to Project Managers and other Service Managers regarding the technical feasibility of various approaches, as well as the processes to modify existing approaches.

·          Meet with, and explain technical information regarding the Unix/Linux infrastructure. Be able to explain complex ideas to key stake holders.

·          Writing of qualification documentation and testing procedures

·          Provide technical input to the Service Level Agreements defined for the service, and input regarding feasibility of different sourcing strategies.

·          Execute system changes and assist in the co-ordination of change management activities.  Support for Level 1-3 support in their execution of system changes.

·          Report major outages, service interruptions, and service failures and assist in the analysis of said interruptions when they occur.

·          Control, administer, and make recommendations for updates to the core Unix/Linux infrastructure systems (e.g. NIM Master, Jumpstart, and Kickstart servers)

·          Define Security settings, rights and privilege standards to ensure compliance to Client ISEC standards.  Conduct regular reviews of systems to ensure deployed systems are compliant to the standards.  Make recommendations to improve security and control standards to maximize resource availability while maintaining the best level of security possible.

·          Help drive the overall continuous improvement, cost reduction and performance of the services..

·          Technically validate that the performance against the SLA/OLA is being met

·          Help establish new parameters for SLAs and OLAs that will better drive the overall maturing of how operations is done within Client and with its vendors.

·          Provide architecture, configuration and code enhancement guidance to infrastructure and application teams across divisions for Client critical applications.

·          Implementation of modern technology and operations concepts according to industry best practice

·          Levels of collaboration/working relationship/personal acceptance achieved with customers inside and outside of Global IT Infrastructure

·          Support Contract Maintenance Renewal Activities

·          For all of the above, lead for Linux Platforms (emphasis on RHEL) and ensure other team members are educated in the platforms to provide full support in their absence
